Classroom Design!

With the 2015-2016 school year upon us I wanted to show everyone my new classroom.

As soon as you get something just the way you want it and have the "flow" correct, things change.  I was moved from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor.  Bye bye nice windows to the trees outside and hello windows I can't reach!

The good thing about this classroom is I have A LOT of space to do things.  As a 6th grade teacher I still decorate my classroom -- many middle school teachers do not because it is "distracting." but bah-humbug to them! Have a look and if you see anything that looks interesting ask and I'll post a close-up! I still have some minor things to do before the year starts, but it is summer time and a girl has to have fun while it lasts!

Before and after!

Coconut oil!

I have read numerous articles about coconut oil and how it does wonders.  I tried it out in my hair while focusing on the ends.  When I say my hair is great and then goes to crap it's  true!  It is either really voluminous and pretty or flat and stringy. I personally blame it on our water because we are basically the frack capital in PA. Gross. 😢

Scooby Doo! and Kiss: Rock & Roll Mystery

Two things :  Scooby-Doo and KISS

Kiss
Visit me for the best 80s and 90s bands :)
For the fellow 80s and 90s babies there were many things that we miss now.  When I was younger I remember my sister, cousin, and their friends making their hair so BIG I was baffled.  I honestly do not know if I could do it to my own without major hairspray usage or the Cameron Diaz magic product from Something About Mary.

In between watching them do their hair and makeup, for hours if I may add, I was watching 'toons! The typical cartoon that was on was Scooby Doo.  Can you say Mystery Machine anyone? It was my fun vehicle I had on MASH games as well as a limo ... I always lived in a Shack. :(    Be ready to rock out with Kiss in the Mystery Machine  -- You have been warned of this greatness! You may not be biting off bat heads like Ozzy from Black Sabbath but you will probably be painting your face!

Get ready to Rock! Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. Gang team up with the one and only KISS in this all-new, out-of-this-world adventure! We join the Gang at Kiss World – the all-things-Kiss theme park, as they investigate a series of strange hauntings. With help from Kiss, they discover that the Crimson Witch has returned to summon The Destroyer from the alternate dimension of Kissteria! The evil duos ghastly plan, to destroy the earth! Can the Gang's cunning and Kiss's power of rock save the day?! Tune in to this Rock and Roll Mystery for some thunderous, heavy FUN!

Play with the sound machine below to prepare yourself for this amazing DVD! Did I mention that I am giving one away?

Summer time is approaching fast and we are bringing 1000 feet of slick vinyl to brighten your city streets. Slide the City is a family friendly slip-and-slide water party event. There will be live music, food, drinks, water, and of course the biggest slip and slide ever to hit Pittsburgh!  Turning hills into water-sliding thrills is the goal of the event, which was created in an effort to get people outside, having fun, and connecting with their community.

Come dressed to impress because it's not every day you can strut through town with your hot bod, cool dance moves and slick slides. Did we mention 1000 feet? Yeah, that's over 3 football fields.

Make sure to bring your water buckets, floaties, and water guns (non-realistic of course), to squirt, spray, splash, and get all attending soaked.

Participants in Slide the City will ride inflatables down a 1,000-ft. slip and slide. This one-of-a-kind experience will help people “slide into summer.” The first event of its kind, Slide the City has seen massive growth since it started in 2014. This original concept went viral when the video was released, and this year promises to be bigger, better, and wetter. “This will be one of the highlights of your year,” said Slide The City Founder, T.R. Gourley “Get ready for the slide of your life!”

Pittsburgh has shown great enthusiasm for the event with over 17,000 people signing up to be notified once registration was opened and hundreds more joining the waitlist daily.

Each rider can purchase a one ride pass, three ride pass, or all-day pass. With over 150 events in the US and Canada, and more than 20 international locations beginning with Japan and Australia as early as March, water slide enthusiasts are sure to find a Slide the City event nearby.

All are welcome to slide into fun. Visit www.slidethecity.com for more information about Slide the City dates and locations or checkout what fans have to share on Facebook at www.facebook.com/slidethecity.

Water conservation is also a priority at our events. We strive to have zero environmental impact on the community. The Slide was designed to have zero water loss, and it treats and recycles the water safely and efficiently throughout the day. When permitted, we donate the water back to the community. March madness! Read, Read, Read!

As a teacher I always promote reading.  In my classroom some students have very little confidence about their reading skills and abilities. At the beginning of the year I told them there are going to be times that they "hate" what I am going to do but I promise they will love it as the year goes on.  Our district participates in Accelerated Reader and I love that i can see the scores on their STAR Test when we take it.  So far this year we have taken the STAR twice and every student improved with the majority going up two grade levels. To say I am proud is an understatement! I love when they volunteer to read or help each other out when reading aloud-I taught the "3try" rule (try it 3 times and someone else can help you out).  It has really improved their decoding skills!

*As we're sure you are aware, an early introduction to reading is an important part of kids' development. In fact, kids who are read to at home have a substantial academic advantage. These advantages last throughout a child's academic career. Studies have shown that:
  • Twenty-six percent of children who were read to three or four times in the last week by a family member recognized all letters of the alphabet. This is compared to 14 percent of children who were read to less frequently.
  • According to NCES, only 53 percent of children ages three to five were read to daily by a family member. Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud every day than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty.
  • The NCES also reported that children who were read to frequently are also more likely to:
    • Count to 20 or higher than those who were not (60% vs. 44%)
    • Write their own names (54% vs. 40%)
    • Read or pretend to read (77% vs. 57%)

As a part of the March "Reading Month Challenge," LeapFrog will be partnering with a great non-profit, Kristi Yamaguchi's Always Dream Foundation, to donate 20 books to the foundation's under-served classrooms for every pledgereceived. Through this program, they plan to donate over 350,000 books to children in need.  Families just need to try to read 20 minutes a day... That's it! Visit www.LeapFrog.com/Challenge for more information.  Give a lot of confidence to your children when it comes to reading and they will succeed in school!
