Why do we give flowers for Valentine’s Day?

I’m in the mood for some researching today to get me away from all the shopping of Christmas – today, I just want to read! So her goes…follow along, these are essential facts we all need to know.


Flowers have long been the go–to gift for Valentine’s Day.

Many couples choose Valentines Day gifts from places like Interflora every year, but where does the tradition of giving flowers stem from, if you’ll excuse the pun!

The custom actually came to the UK from Japan where there was already a similar tradition called Hanakatoba. The problem they had was that they wanted a way to express their feelings for each other across long distances, but the majority of the population were illiterate so a love note or letter was impractical.

Flowers, with their scent and beauty, were the logical and practical choice. Different flowers or even colours of flowers became a language between lovers and friends. People could have meaningful conversations without saying a word. This tradition came over to England and by the Victorian era couples were well versed in the “language of flowers”.

So why are red roses the flower of choice for Valentine’s Day? Roses are a flower in which the variation can mean a lot, but all of the connotations are positive. Red roses mean true love and passion; which is why they’re perfect for your significant other at this time of year.
If you want to show more than one feeling try red and white roses; when they’re together in a bouquet it means unity, if you want to show your partner they have nothing to fear then cut the thorns off – though this one works both figuratively and literally!

One word of caution, though, even someone who is not versed in this language will know what a dead bunch means, so don’t buy too far in advance!

My November Starbox!

I have come to love the 23rd of every month!  My Starbox has officially become my favorite subscription box service!  Starbox is a monthly beauty box that includes three to four full-sized beauty products!  By full-sized I mean that it is the same size that they sell on their website.  No mini bottles or tiny sample packs come in this box! This month's box included a nude tendergloss(lipstick and lip gloss combo) in the color pearl, a four eyeshadow palette designed for my skin tone, a 3-in-1 mascara guide/applicator and two quartz crystals.

When I first opened the eye shadows, I thought that they looked way too dark.  But after I tried them all one, I really liked them.  I love that the palette comes with instructions because sometimes I find it hard to figure out which color goes there.  These are colors that I would use on any normal day.  

At first, I thought that the tendergloss was a lipstick.  As I tried it on the first time, I could tell that this wasn't the ordinary lipstick.  It looks and feels like a gloss in stick form.  The color is a great neutral for me.  This may be my new favorite form of lip product!

As I opened my Starbox the first thing I noticed was the 3-in-1 mascara guide/applicator.  I said to my husband, "What the heck could this thing even be?".  I read the insert that comes with every Starbox then it clicked! I was excited to try this out and after trying it out for a few days, I became a fan.  It keeps my mascara from getting all over my eyelids and I can even brush out all the clumps.  I use this every day now!

Once again, Starbox has impressed me and I will be waiting on the 23rd next month!
