The Chapel Chronicles is a 44-page hand drawn, full color comic book. It follows Chapel Smith, a 11-year-old who has a collection of hats, a hedgehog name Rupert and an obsession with Lady Gaga. Each comic has a commentary at the bottom which is just as great as the comic itself.
About the Author:
Emma T Capps is only 14 and already a award winning author, artist and cartoonist. (At 14, my mom was happy if I made my bed!) Emma came up with the idea for Chapel Chronicles while doing an 8th grade project. She has won a Gold Medal in the 2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her comic book Jam Days. She has also received a Merit Award from California for her poetry collection Postcard Dreams. She has also been published in national magazines such as Stone Soup, Creative Kids and Skipping Stones. Not too shabby for a 14-year-old!
Check out Emma in action!
I was expecting a book that was written by a teenager to be just for kids. Not so! She has really managed to make her comics appeal to all ages. For example, the comic "Chapel Guevara" is about her wanting to get a puppy. Any child can relate to that! The commentary at the bottom made me laugh out loud and I think most parents would also find it funny. "Tip to parents: If you child is marching around with a protest sign and a 'Democracy Now' headband, maybe you should consider getting them the damn puppy."
Emma has not only created an awesome comic book but also sells greeting cards, pins, collectables, and more on her website.
