Roll Call Book Tour

Photobucket
Roll Call is a story with a cast of characters that include Mexican drug cartels, southern California street gangs and Hell's Angels all fighting for their piece of the drug culture. In the middle of it all, B.J. is hell bent for destruction until he realizes his destiny in the nick of time. Add a good detective squeezed out of the loop by an overzealous narcotic detective; a robust prison union trying to call the shots; a handful of drug criminals trying to find their conscience and you have the perfect recipe for a revolutionary uprising, bound by blood, all leaving the reader wondering, who are the real criminals?

Glenn Langohr's other books include: Upon Release ( Roll Call Volume 2 ) .99 cents with kindle, Race Riots ( Prison Killers Book 1 ), Lock Up Diaries ( Prison Killers Book 2 ), Gladiator ( Prison Killers Book 3 ) and Underdog ( Prison Killers Book 4 )
This book can and should be made into a movie!  It made me think of OZ, the TV show that was on HBO.  I have wondered what it was like for one to be in prison, especially if they were arrested for drug possession and were in a cell with someone who committed murder.  It gives me the willies!  The author starts the book out by introducing us to his way of life and why he got into selling and dealing.  Being a HS teacher I have seen and been around students who decided to make their way of life "profitable" like BJ did when he was  a teen.  It was amazing to hear some of the ways he "got away" and who was actually the bad guys in the story.  While in prison, BJ described many horrific situations and ways prisoners communicate.  It was easy to get sucked into the plot line and the emotional battles of the characters in the book.  This would be a great book to include in a summer reading program or in a 'Scared Straight' program.  It was not as harsh as others have said, with the prison violence and all, but an eye opener to all who have no experience or knowledge besides what the movies show us.
All though the book I thought it mirrored Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken poem.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

News on the Homefront Book Tour~R/GA~

TITLE: News on the Home
AUTHOR: Christopher G. McPherson
GENRE: Historical Fiction

Book Description:
Set against a worldwide canvas that includes New York, Paris and Germany "News on the Home Front" tells the story of two women who have been friends since their childhood in West Lake, Maryland. The world war has torn apart their lives leaving each trying to find a way to put it back together. It's been a difficult few years with rationing and shortages starting to take their toll. Carole's boyfriend, Philip, is off to fly for the Army; and Irene has taken a job at the nearby aircraft factory. Carole promised Philip that she would wait for his return from the war -- but circumstances begin to conspire against her. She's waited her whole life for him, but can she make it until the end of the war?

Interview with Christopher McPherson!
What is your book about?
"News on the Home Front" looks at what was happening in the states during World War Two while war raged overseas. It focuses on two women who have been friends since childhood and how the war affects them.

How did you come up with the title?
It seems like everyone writes about war from the point of view of the soldiers. I wanted to write a novel from the vantage point of the people left behind in the states while their loved ones fought. During the 1940s, a common phrase used by Americans overseas was "Any news from the home front?" I changed that a little and came up with my title.

Why World War Two?
The war years of the 1940s were perhaps the last time everyone in this country came together behind a single cause. There was a real possibility the American way of life would come to an end with the aggression shown by the Japanese and German military's. People were scared and motivated to do their part. It seemed like fertile ground for a story.

Your two main characters are women. Why?
The so-called "women's movies" of the 1930s and 1940s fascinate me. They have strong female characters and I find that really interesting. In my novel I wanted to show that strength does not just come from a gun, it also comes from inside when having to deal with tragedy, rationing, invasion fears, etc. I also liked the idea of having one of my characters work at an aircraft plant. People too often overlook the tremendous contribution to the war made by women; aside from Rosie the Riveter you never hear any of their stories.

What books have influenced your style of writing the most?
I was influenced early by Ayn Rand ("The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged"). She has a way of creating characters and setting scenes that really make you sit up and take notice. In all my fiction writing I try to create characters as vivid and memorable as hers. It's not easy, let me tell you.

Are there specific teachers whom you gained a love for reading and writing from?
I was an avid reader long before I started formal schooling. Reading and I were best friends from an early age. I was really sick as a child so I had lots of time to myself to engage my imagination. It was probably one of the best things that could have ever happened to me. I started writing pretty young, too, noodling around with words, creating animal stories and various adventures. I began writing professionally quite early and built a career writing for newspapers, magazines, radio, the stage and some television.

The Green Book Tour

TITLE: The Green
AUTHOR: Karly Kirkpatrick
GENRE: Young Adult

Book Description:
How far would you go to save your dream?  Seventeen-year-old Ariceli Pisa is a senior at the prestigious Cambridge High School and has her sights set on Northwestern University. She's a cheerleader, a member of the National Honor Society...and a drug dealer. That's not the only secret she has to keep from her best friend Naomi--she’s also madly in love with Naomi’s ex-boyfriend, James Bartlett. Trying to balance her life at Cambridge High with her new demanding job keeps her teetering on the edge of disaster.

Kirkpatrick hit the nail on the head when she described Ari.  Often the popular kids who happen to be smart and beautiful have a secret life others do not know about.  In Ari's case she was a drug dealer.  In reality this happens more than not because who wants to think the kid getting good grades is actually doing something bad?  Noone does! Some people are saying the material presented in the book is shocking to young readers, such as drugs and drug use, but the thing is it happens everyday in life.  As a HS teacher I have seen this more often than parents would want to know - it is out there and you can not hide it from your kids.  As a piece of literature there is nothing wrong with it - it happens in reality!I get a big kick when people keep saying a good girl selling drugs can not happen .. hahaha!

The book was great.  The characters in the book were realistic and often face challenges that we deal with in our own lives.  Ari has two parts of her life, one that she keeps hidden from everyone because she is ashamed of it.  She is trying to save money and help pay bills so she can stay in a  good school district and attend a prestigious college.  The Green has a riveting storyline that surrounded me in the world of deception, struggle, lies, and adventure.  I highly recommend it for all readers!  As others have cautioned you should be 14+, do not listen!  From being in the schools everyday as a teacher this stuff is seen by your children whether you want it to or not.  Again it is a realistic piece of literature and you must read it!

Romancing Olive Book Tour!

Photobucket
Romancing Olive by Holly Bush   Genre: Historical Romance
Synopsis: In 1891, spinster librarian, Olive Wilkins, is shocked to learn of her brother’s violent death at a saloon gaming table and her sister-in-law’s subsequent murder, traveling far from her staid life to rescue her niece and nephew, now orphans. She arrives to find the circumstances of her brother’s life deplorable and her long held beliefs of family and tradition, shaken. Accustomed to the sophistication of Philadelphia, Olive arrives in Spencer, Ohio, a rough and tumble world she is not familiar with, facing two traumatized children. Her niece and nephew, Mary and John, have been living with a neighboring farmer, widower Jacob Butler, the father of three young children of his own and a man still in pain from the recent loss of his wife. Real danger threatens Olive and Mary and John while Jacob and his own brood battle the day-to-day struggles for survival. Will Olive and Jacob find the strength to fight their battles alone or together? Will love conquer the bitterness of loss and broken dreams?
How did you come up with the title(s)? Romancing Olive implies a past, a present and a future and Olive's journey is the crux of the story. Train Station Bride sets up the whole story and begs a question - Who gets married at a train station and why?

What books have influences your life the most? To Kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, Slightly Married and A Prayer for Owen Meany are my top all-time and yes, it's a bit of an odd group.

About how many tries did it take to get your book published? I always tell my students many writers have great difficulty in this part but never give up!
Both of my books are self-published through a company called BookBaby. I have 5 historical romances and 1 and a half women's fiction books written. I started writing fifteen years ago and have an Excel Spread Sheet for the books I've queried. I've sent as many as 300 letters or emails to mostly agents and some publishers for my books. Traditional publishing can be very frustrating and hard to break into especially as there are requirements that you don't always know when you begin writing, especially concerning word count. Writing a good query can be more difficult than writing your book. It's a different kind of writing and the preferred style can change from agent to agent.

As frustrating as this has been, my family has been very supportive of my writing and I've always belonged to a writer's group. I tell all writers starting out, or at any stage of their career for that matter, to join a writer's group. Reading your own work aloud and hearing comments can be some of the most useful feedback you will ever get and hearing other writers read their work and working out in your head why it did or didn't sound or feel right is tremendously helpful to any writer.

The changes in publishing will offer new writers a foothold that hasn't been available for a decade because traditional publishers eliminated or vastly reduced their mid-list author list. The new formula, I think, will be to do all the basic marketing and build a fan base through self-publishing and then begin to query agents and editors. In fact, from what I'm reading, some agents are scouring Amazon and Goodreads and Shelfari and other sites like those for writers without contracts that are already reaching a fan base rather than looking for writers from query letters only. Bottom line is - keep writing and editing.

Is there a specific teacher or teachers whom you gained a love for reading and writing from? Mrs. Cavanaugh and Mrs. Dillon of the Greater Latrobe High School English Department were both great influences on me. My parents were the most influential, though. Everyone in my house was always reading a book or two. Growing up we didn't watch much TV, and my father didn't care what I read, even if it was a Jughead comic book, as long as I was reading.
Thank you so much Holly!  We all enjoyed your responses :)

Trying to Score Book Tour

Trying to Score - Toni Aleo
Genre: sports romance
Synopsis:  Fallon Parker’s dream was to have her families’ wine company at the top of all wine magazines and to have a cellar of her own. After graduating from college, she has worked hard to make that dream a reality, even if that meant having a nonexistent love life. She had her chance at love and that was a bust, so she put everything into the wine company. After becoming the official sponsor of the Nashville Assassins, Fallon finally feels like everything is falling in place, that is until Lucas Brooks comes back into her life. Lucas Brooks hates his life. He is lonely, he is sober, and he is angry. On the ice, when he’s not in the sin bin, he the leading scorer in the NHL but off the ice, he is a mess. He threw away the most important person in his life, and has regretted it ever since but when Lucas sees Fallon again after being traded to the Assassins; he is bound and determined to get her back. Even if she wants nothing to do with him. The sexual tension between Fallon and Lucas is electrifying as Lucas tries to convince Fallon that he is a change man. Fallon tries to resist Lucas, but it is so hard when all her body wants is his. But when Lucas finds out that Fallon has been keeping a huge secret from him, the game he is playing stops and penalties are called. With new rules and new players on the ice, will Fallon and Lucas be able to work out their differences and work as a team or will they be left trying to score alone.
-----
Anything that deals with wine I love.  This has some spoilers in it... sorry... I try not to ever do this!  Although this was a good story, I had a few reservations about it.  I really thought the main character, Fallon, was going to be a nice lady because she worked do hard to get where she was. Yet, when I found out what the big secret was I thought she was really mean.  Lucas meets the apple of his eye, his own son.  What? Yes I said son, Aiden.  Like any book there is always a character that the reader instantly dislikes, which was Fallon in my case.  She was so mean and stubborn, if that is even the right word, towards Luke.  I think she did not use her entire brain when dealing with the situation and kept thinking Luke could do much better.   This story is about love lost and found again,  in a form you would never have imagined.

The Light Tamer Book Tour

Synopsis: Jessie moved from New York to North Carolina one week after school let out for summer break. Her newly single mother and Jessie move in with grandma Gayle. Being a teen in a retirement area, is one more thing to add to her ‘this sucks’ list. It’s bad enough to have to move, but even worse her alcoholic father left them as he went on a quest to be an artist in Greece.  Things begin to look up when she is reintroduced to Caleb, the dorky boy that saved her life one summer at the beach. Caleb is no longer scrawny and nerdy, he is now tall, dark and handsome. Caleb is a Light Tamer.  Jessie and Amber become fast friends. Amber is a no frills girl, her snarky comments and sassy attitude will raise a few eyebrows and have you laughing out loud. Amber is rough around the edges, a light tamer with only two years left to find the one she is bound to. Her father’s surfing accident left her dad paralyzed and her brother dead.  This paranormal romance will keep you on the edge of your seat with humor, romance, and determination. Fall head over heels for Caleb and Jessie.

In all honesty I love to read Young Adult books.  To me it is a category that is filled with books adults love to read, as well as teenagers.  The Light Tamer was told as a 1st person POV (Point Of View). The main character, Jessie is a 15yo who just moved to a new town.  We all know moving to a new town is difficult - new friends, new cliques, new clothes fashion, teenage angst.  Devyn Dawnson did a great job at describing the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are displayed.  I think putting the typical teenage worries into words is difficult, yet Dawnson did it.  As you get to know Jessie and Caleb  you instantly feel that connection between reader and character.  By the end of the book you are anxiously waiting for the second story in the trilogy to find out more information and to answer those questions that are sitting on the back of your mind after reading this.   Be sure to go to Amazon to buy it!  Kindle $2.99 Paperback $14.99

Taking Shots Book Tour

Taking Shots - Toni Aleo
Genre: sports romance
Synopsis:Elli Fisher has never thought she was good enough. Let it be her job, her weight, her love life, nothing, she was convinced she couldn’t do anything right. She had walked through life for the past six years in a daze, never thinking that life could be good again after the abuse she endured from her ex boyfriend. She is lonely, sad, and depressed, that is until she meets Shea Adler. After doing a promotional shoot for the NHL team, the Nashville Assassins, she meets the hunky hockey player who shoots a puck, shattering her world.  Shea Adler was tired of the life he was living outside of the rink. The girls, the money blowing, the drinking, everything had to stop and it all did when he met Eleanor Fisher. He had never met anyone like her. She is feisty, witty, shy, and simply gorgeous. When he laid eyes on her, it was as if he was taking the hardest hit of his life into the boards, and he had to have her.  Elli is a little skeptical of Shea, but he knows that they were meant to be together, and he needed her in his life. But Elli just doesn’t understand what Shea could see in her. She is overweight, loud, and not even that pretty, so why would someone so gorgeous and so amazing want to be with her? It seemed that no matter how hard she tried to shake Shea off, he wasn’t going anywhere, and for the first time Elli didn’t feel alone.  But could Elli throw her insecurities out the window and love Shea with everything inside of her? Or will she let a past relationship, and her family ruin any chance of her being happy? Would Ellie miss her shot at love?
 ---
Being an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I loved that it was an actual hockey story.  To be honest this was the first book that really dealt with the NHL and a love story I have ever read or heard about.  I always wondered what the players were like off the ice, because they are so tough and determined on it.  When HBO did Penguins Vs. Flyers 24/7 I loved it!  Who knew that a tradition/superstition was to eat a PB&J sandwich (or sandwitch as some students write) before a game?  Taking Shots was captivating and I was hooked from the moment it began.  The author, Toni Aleo, describes Elli as a typical lady would think of herself - weighing more than the average girl, not as pretty as others, and having the typical comparison issues of girls they see in magazines.  When she met and began to know Shea the "player" it allows one to realize we may be able to get over out inner demons regarding looks.  To find out more head over to buy the book on Amazon OR enter below!

Train Station Bride Book Tour

Train Station Bride by Holly Bush
Genre: Historical Romance

Synopsis:
1887 Debutante, Julia Crawford endures a lifetime of subtle ridicule as the plump, silly daughter of a premiere Boston family. Julia strikes out on her own to gain independence, traveling to the Midwest to marry an aging shopkeeper and care for his mother.  Julia finds her new home rough and uncivilized after the sophistication of a big city, while closely held secrets threaten to ruin Julia’s one chance at love.  Jake Shelling was sixteen and grew up quick when his parents died from influenza on the North Dakota prairie.  Left with a half-cleared farm and two young sisters, he spent little time on his own needs . . till now.  At thirty-five, he figured it was high time to have some sons and a mail order bride would suit him just fine. No expectations of love, just a helpmate from sturdy stock, ready for farm life.

The moment you begin this book you will constantly think, "What is going to happen?"  The only image I have of ladies from the 1800s include big dresses, tight corsets, and prim.  This is what image I think of the picture to the right.  What did they dress like and act like on the farm?  Well I obviously had to do research myself to see what it was like, especially because it was so different being in a rural setting compared to a city setting.

The picture on the left is from the Library of Congress website, which I absolutely love, and shows a business street in N. Dakota between 1890 - 1910.  I always want a place to see where the story is in person, so this makes it more concrete.

As I read Train Station Bride I could not help but think how different it is for women now compared to back then.  It is accepted if a lady has a baby and is not married, dates several times before finding the right man, or talks back!  The main character, Julia, is basically shunned by her family and is considered the 'ugly duckling' of her sisters.  In the meantime she is writing to a man across the US, she is in Boston while he is near N. Dakota.  As any normal lady would do she picks up and leaves her life of fancy dresses to begin life with a man who owns a shop and needs help with his mom.  Low and behold a mistake happens and she falls for a man on a farm!  Can she deal with the mistake she made regarding men?  Does she really love the man she just met or the one she wrote to many times?  What is a girl to do when you leave your own family and wind up in a place totally unknown and different from what you knew?

The Strangers Outside Book Tour~R/GA~

The Strangers Outside by Vanessa Morgan

Genre: Supernatural Suspense
Synopsis:
Two sisters, Jennifer and Louise, return to their remote holiday cottage after a day at the seaside. But little do they know they're being surrounded. Soon after their arrival the girls will come face to face with THE STRANGERS OUTSIDE.  When the assailants make their intentions known, things take a shockingly terrible turn and an intense battle for survival will begin.
-----
This was a pretty short story, around 24 pages in total.  Jennifer and Louise, sisters, were on vacation (holiday to everyone else in the world) and staying at little brown cottages.  After the author gave you background on the sisters, the main plot begins on page 11.  You instantly are drawn into their world, with many questions o the back of your mind about what is going on.  The story is a ladder for suspense.  However the end made me think the person climbing that ladder just fell right off.  I liked the suspense and where the story was going, but the end was so abrupt I was let down.  It seemed like this could have been stretched into a SciFi movie, but the end definitely needs to be changed.

--------
Megan, the mother, is a national TV reporter and the father is a professional photographer.  As with anyone in life, they looked like the perfect family.  As the above synopsis states, their image went down the drain when their son died.  Megan and Michael still have a child, Jenna.  She is an aspiring swimmer and a typical teenage girl who swoons over boys and clothes.  Jenna and Megan went on vacation to Moonlight Creek, which was recommended by a shrink.

At Moonlight Creek there are many families that had problems, yet can not seem to leave.

BeadForLife

ALL NATURAL SHEA BUTTER BEAUTY PRODUCTS FROM BEADFORLIFE
MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF WOMEN IN UGANDA

BeadforLife, a non-profit organization, was founded by three American women to help the women of Uganda learn skills that would allow them to earn livable wages. BeadforLife began by teaching women to make beautiful beaded jewelry out of recycled paper.  They launched a second income-generating project in northern Uganda in 2010, creating a livelihood for the extremely poor women who farm and gather Shea nuts. BeadforLife makes the Shea nuts into Shea butter products, including creams, soaps and lip balms.  The sales of these products have the potential to empower tens of thousands of women.  Currently, BeadforLife is working with 740 women, most of whom are farmers, to educate them about how to improve the quality of their farms and bring their agricultural goods to market.

Oh my goodness this smells wonderful!  It is called African Lemongrass  and Lavender.  I honestly can sit here and smell the soap - I wish they could bottle it and put it in a room spray :)  The lip gloss is so much better than ChapStick.  It is made from Shea Butter and has a peppermint taste.  Yum! I am one of those people who licks the lip gloss off their lips to taste it, guilty!  In Uganda Shea nuts are called "Women's Gold" and this soap makes me feel like I am washing in it.  The soap is made from Shea Butter, Palm Oil, Coconut Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Essential Oils, and Lemongrass.

As a bonus, you can teach others about this!  They have developed a curriculum :)  I love it!
The BeadforLife Curriculum is designed for grades 6-12 but is easily adapted for younger and older students. Students will use hands-on activities, simulations, and discussions to better understand global poverty and ways they can take concrete actions to help.
As a teacher I have to include this image so you know where Uganda is!
