Deceived Book Tour!
The Taker Book Tour
Synopsis: A love story spanning over 200 years
On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Main, Dr. Luke Findley
is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional
domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his
ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and
plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is
inexplicably drawn to her…despite the fact that she is a murder suspect
with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of
enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and
mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.
Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century
in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan
settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town's
founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price
she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate
for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing
and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.

------
I honestly have no words except AMAZING! OK, we fibbed.. this is a one of a kind story and I'm sure we can say a lot about it. The Taker was riveting, filled with emotions and amazing details. The first night I read well over 200 pages. Yes, if I love a book I will try to read the entire thing in one sitting! The author uses the tactic of beginning with a story, like in the present then jumping to another time. It gives us more information and knowledge on the characters and hooks people like me to keep reading. I honestly thought the stories from the past were much more exciting than present ones involving Lanny and Luke. I loved to hear the way they dressed and why Lanny is the way she is. I kept thinking why did Lanny and Luke have a connection? Why? Just tell me!
The character development Alma Katsu uses is an absolute art. How the characters interact is like seeing a movie before my eyes. The author, Alma Katsu, gives each character qualities that we both love and hate at the same time. Much like a person in real life, there are things that we would rather keep quiet than allowing others know, which Lanny symbolizes well. I am putting this book in the same ranking as Charline Harris Sookie Stackhouse books - True Blood. It is very addicting to read and has a great plot! I hope there are going to be many more in this series in the future! This book honestly just went to paperback in March - go buy it! If you are going on vacation take it with you :) I am starting the next book later tonight!
Be sure to watch for our review of the second book in The Taker Trilogy!

I See Me! Personalized Children's Books~Review, Coupons and Giveaway!
My niece Ava has just about every toy she could possibly wish for. Now that she is almost six, she is really into whatever fad toy is around that month. The problem with that is now her room is filled with toys that she only played for a few months, if that. Her birthday is coming up so I was really trying to find something different to give her. When I saw the I See Me! website, I knew I had a winner. She is just learning to read and I know that seeing her name is print would be really cool for her. I chose the My Very Happy Birthday book for Ava's 6th birthday. When ordering all you have to do is add the child's name, age, and gender. Then you get to pick from many premade dedications and say who the book is from and you're done! I was worried about the dedication but there were a lot to choose from so it was easy to find the perfect one for her. When I received her book, I was really surprised with the quality! It was made excellently and the colors were very bright. I am planning on buying one for my daughter for her birthday. This is the kind of book that you would keep forever as a keepsake. You can take the Virtual Book Tour at ISeeMe.com! for most of the books so you can see the quality for yourself before buying. You will not be disappointed! Here are a few other titles that would make great gifts:

-------
I read this book in a few hours sitting in the doctors office waiting for an appointment for my future father in-law. For me it was a quick and easy read.
It incorporates the silent tragedy and secrets teens, adults as well, keep close to them so others do not realize what is going on. When I was younger I remember my mom telling me that there is no such thing as a perfect cookie-cutter family - even the ones that appear so happy or have everything are always missing/hiding something. This book points it out exactly.
Jake is a star hockey player and lives with his dad and little brother, Drake. Is their family perfect? Not quite. His dad is an alcoholic who continually blames Jake, the main character, for his mom dying. However, she died from the nasty C-Word, Cancer. Jake has taken the role of being the father/mother for himself and younger brother. He cooks, cleans, goes grocery shopping, watches Drake, and even helps Drake with his homework. Drake will often go to practice and games with him because Jake is afraid to leave him at home. He keeps this secret from everyone in school, even his teammates.

Multiply and Divide with Sticks and Steps~Review~

As a Special Education teacher I am often faced with math difficulties, in both the students and parents. I implement a home letter to inform the parents what is going on in the classroom and a bit of review on topics that we will come across in case they (the parent) need help! Trust me, this is important! If you have a little one who is just starting school ask the teacher for a parent letter - especially if the district is using a set math curriculum.
Sticks and Steps is a great book to have in the classroom and to have as a parent! I always implement Math Facts, which allows me as a Special Education teacher to track the students progress with addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. You would be surprised how many student do not understand multiplication when they encounter it in school, even HS students! It is scary at first for a teacher, but for me it is a beginning. It allows me to set my own goal for that student - "By the end of the 9weeks I want this student to be able to multiply up to the 9X9 with 90% proficiency." By the way, that could also be used for Progress Monitoring or for an IEP goal/objective :)
First I need to say this book would be great for a Bell Ringer. A Bell Ringer is the beginning 5 minutes of class to get the 'Brain in Motion' and begin to learn. It would be extremely easy to photocopy onto overheads to use, which I highly recommend. With some Special Education students it may be appropriate to actually copy a page for them to see in front of them and on the overhead - it often does help!
The supplementary curriculum in this book is great! It easily allows one to follow along and try their own multiplication. With sticks and steps it is easy to understand what the Sticks and Steps are. I would have loved it the Sticks and Steps were different colors, not just light grey and black. If you do copy on overheads you can use your colored markers to do this! It is a little longer to do the sticks and step method in division, but once the student/child learns the process and reasoning behind it, they are set. I loved how you can do LCM (Least Common Multiple)! When I taught this last year I wish I had this idea.
Without a doubt I would recommend this to any teacher or parent. The final words of advice from me for teaching multiplication and division are 'Always give encouragement!'

Lightning-fast Spanish For Kids and Families
Almost every year my future hubster and I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to the Riviera Maya for vacation. As Carolyn stated in the book introduction, most people do not get past "mas cerveza por favor!" B and I have both had 4 years of Spanish in high school, we did learn a lot but then forgot most of it. When I was in college for undergrad I chose to take a Spanish class. When I signed up it stated TBA or the Instructor and when I went to class the first day it was one of my HS Spanish teachers! I learned a lot in the class, had to be an example for everyone ... but talking and listening are two different things. I was great at listening to the conversations and know what they were saying. While we were on a dive boat in Mexico the dive crew were making jokes and I was laughing. Our Dive Master was blown away that I could understand what they were saying, but I could only speak a few phrases back in Spanish.
I love that the author put instructions on how to use the book. Most people would just jump right in, often trying them then forgetting the words like B and I did in HS. As a teacher I loved that we can take the lessons and actually use them as quick lesson plans in the classroom. Carolyn breaks the lessons up and includes various parts that are easily organized for you. I actually tried lesson 1 in the room while folding clothes. It was a hoot! Sean and my dog just looked at and and were wondering why I had a laundry basket and talking in Spanish to them.
Overall this book is wonderful. One of my favorite parts was the activities section. I though the Map Game activity listed was a great resource. In my first 4 years of Spanish we honestly went over all the words listed. As a teacher these are all activities I would use in and outside the classroom. If you are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country this would be a great resource to use before you leave - you can always use it on the airplane too! If she does get to offer additional resources for Spanish, word flash cards would be great! Visit her on Amazon to purchase it or read more reviews!

NICKELS: Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) ~Review & Giveaway~
Hosted by eReading on the Cheap & Slap Dash Mom
A Tale of Dissociation
Christine Stark
What is DID?
Dissociative identity disorder (DID, also known as multiple personality disorder in the ICD-10[1]) is a psychiatric diagnosis whose essential feature, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), "...is the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states...that recurrently take control of behavior."[2] The diagnosis requires that at least two personalities (one may be the host) routinely take control of the individual's behavior with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness; in addition, symptoms cannot be the temporary effects of drug use or a general medical condition.[3] Memory loss will occur in those with DID when an alternate part of the personality becomes dominant. DID is less common than other dissociative disorders, occurring in approximately 10% of dissociative disorder cases[4] and 1% of the general population.[5] Diagnosis is often difficult as there is considerable co-morbidity with other conditions and many symptoms overlap with other types of mental illness.[2] It is diagnosed significantly more frequently in North America than in the rest of the world.[6][7] Wikipedia
Nickels is a one of a kind story. It pulls one in from the start because it shows us a little girl grow up before our eyes and experience what we can only imagine of the worst. As the table of contents shows, it allows us to follow her from age 4 through 26. The author writes in fragments, or thoughts, in a first person point of view. The tone of Nickels is strong and clear, beginning on the very first page. As the reader we travel through the horrible experience of Little Miss So and So from school to home, to friendship, to love, to anger, and finally survival healing. After reading the very first chapter you become engrossed in the story, no matter how horrible it seems, because events like this are real, sadly. Unfortunately, as a teacher I ran across events such as this. They were each heartbreaking and made me become quite cold-hearted towards parents, like Little Miss So and So's mother, who chose to ignore events such as the ones that develop in the book. With the resilience of a bumblebee, the main character comes to terms with what has happened in her life and decides to help herself and leave her "nickel" life behind.
Nickels follows a biracial girl named "Little Miss So and So", from age 4-1/2 into adulthood. Told in a series of prose poems, Nickels' lyrical and inventive language conveys the dissociative states born of a world formed by persistent and brutal incest and homophobia. The dissociative states enable the child's survival and, ultimately, the adult's healing. The story is both heartbreaking and triumphant. Nickels is the groundbreaking debut of Minneapolis-area author and artist Christine Stark.Christine Stark is an amazing person, writer, and healer. Christine has been speaking about sexual exploitation and other social justice issues at law schools, national and international conferences, rallies, Take Back the Nights, universities, shelters, and rape crisis centers for over twenty years. She has also appeared on NPR’s Justice Talking and numerous radio and television shows. A Good Man Book Tour
First, I am not a fan of screenplays unless. From the very begging it seems like Louis is a creepy individual. He has no self esteem really but he helps homeless people when he can. Does he help them willing or is it out of guilt? When he is in therapy is he talking to himself? He basically kills all the bad people in the world, drug abusers and hookers. I can't say I really enjoyed the screenplay because I like a more concrete book, with more detail as in describing the scene and setting, giving the characters a more defined personality and characteristic. I saw the main character as an older man who was progressively looking sickly. If this was a novel with chapters I would enjoy it. Below is an excerpt from the screenplay that I read.
The author stated if we like Dexter and American Psycho we have a good chance of liking A Good Man. This screenplay is actually being turned into a feature film in France by Radowski Films. We all know that French and American films and interests are different. She is the author of two books of supernatural suspense genre, Drowned Sorrow and The Strangers Outside.
Louis
Caron is a good man - he is a vegetarian, feeds homeless people, takes
care of animals and is concerned with environmental issues. But his
altruism has a sinister edge: he's a vampire and local inspector
Taglioni becomes increasingly suspicious of him. Louis' attempt to
escape the police will take him on a journey into his own private hell
where he is not only forced to confront his worst fears, but where he
will also destroy the lives of those he cares about.
--------
Excerpt:
EXT – STREET – DAY Snow-covered streets seen through a
floor-to-ceiling window.
FRED (V.O.)
Would you like to begin, Eric? Your
case is rather peculiar.
ERIC (V.O.)
My name is Eric. I've been a vampire
since 1973 and I have constant headaches
because of a brain tumor. An eternal headache,
if you get what I mean. I'm also
suffering from depression, but that's curable,
they say – even for a vampire.
INT. PSYCHOLOGIST'S OFFICE – DAY
LOUIS CARON (55 years old) stares out
the window, lost in thought. Behind him, four
people participate in their weekly group therapy session.
Amongst them: a French lady with crutches (MADAME
RENAUD, 50's), a depressive cancer patient (ERIC, 40's)
and a black obese woman with an exuberant
personality (LÉOPOLDINE, 40's). The moderator, FRED
(35), has a gentle voice. Your typical spiritual
guru.
MADAME RENAUD (with a French accent)
That's nothing compared to me. I have
a broken hip, too much cholesterol, chronic sinusitus –
LÉOPOLDINE (provocatively)
I was wondering, Madame Renaud... Were
you already a hypochondriac when you
were transformed or did that come later?
MADAME RENAUD (too busy with herself to hear the remark) … Lupus, malaria, lack of vitamine
C, Addison's disease, …
ERIC
What's bizarre is that every time she
comes here, the list gets longer.
FRED
Let's listen to what Louis has to
say. (to Louis) Do you want to come and join us,
Louis? Louis turns. He was obviously not
following the conversation.
LOUIS
Uhm? What? (notices that the session has
begun) Oh, hi Fred. I didn't hear you come
in. Louis sits down.
FRED
Go ahead. Madame Renaud is still enumerating her
ailments.
FRED
Miss Renaud! She stops speaking. Fred gestures that
it is Louis' turn.
LOUIS
My name is Louis. Louis Caron. I've
been a vampire since 1750 and as you can see,
I'm old and ugly. For me, that's the
problem about being a vampire. I was 55 when I
was transformed and I will stay 55 forever.
I will have wrinkles forever. I will
have arthritis forever. Fucking
annoying.
FRED
That's your karma taking revenge on
your body. The more good you do around you,
the more you will be able to lead a
happy, healthy life. But because you are
all vampires, your karma is punishing you.
It's as simple as that. Now, what I'd like
to hear from you is what you all do to
improve your karma. What do you do to be a
good person, despite your vampire nature?
